Willow Waterhole Music Fest

There were some proud parents at the Willow Waterhole Music Fest in April. The students from Pin Oak Middle School and HSPVA did a fantastic job (I unfortunately missed Meyerland MS's performance by 10 minutes). I especially enjoyed Pin Oak MS Stage Band's rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.

HISD Special Education Parent Forum

This is the first of three HISD Special Education Forums. Listening to other parents tell their stories and ask their questions was simultaneously horrifying and inspiring. There was tremendous strength in that room. There was also a lot of support from other parents and I received more than one hug or kind word after my speaking time.

Bellaire High School Junior Achievement

I was so happy to support Junior Achievement of Bellaire High School today at their car wash. These students came up with the business they wanted to try, managed it, staffed it, advertised it, and then worked it. They get to keep the funds raised. Many thanks to Ms. Karp, the Bellaire High School technology teacher who gave up her Saturday to supervise the project. HISD teachers are constantly volunteering their free time for their students.

I was so pleased to hear Mayor Parker speak about women running for office. She was honest, candid, and encouraging.

Texas Tribune Symposium on Public Education

The Texas Tribune presented a symposium on public education. I was fortunate to attend and participate in a round table discussion on Special Education the night before the symposium. I was able to meet Theresa Trevino, president of TAMSA (Texans Advocating for Meaningful Student Assessment) and State Representative Dan Huberty, the Chair of the House Public Education Committee. Rep. Huberty introduced a bill to the Texas legislature for school finance reform on March 7, 2017.
